The British Ambassador to the United States Kim Darroch finally resigned, after calling Donald Trump incompetent in his memo.

Memos from Kim Darroch leaked to the British Daily Mail on Sunday, angering Trump who launched a Twitter attack and called it stupid. But Theresa May defended her ambassador.

Trump says he will no longer deal with Darroch and calls May "stupid". In his resignation letter, Darroch said his position could no longer be maintained.

"Since the official document leaked from the Embassy, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding my position and the length of my term as ambassador," Darroch wrote, as quoted by Reuters on July 10, 2019.

"I want to end the speculation," he added. "The current situation makes it impossible for me to carry out my duties as I want."

In his secret memo from 2017 to the present, Darroch, 65, said the White House feud report was "largely correct" and last month described Trump's doubts when canceling a military attack on Iran.

"We do not really believe that this government will be much more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less divided by factions; less careless and diplomatic incompetent," wrote Darroch in a diplomatic cable.

Theresa May told parliament that the ministers had expressed their support for Darroch, a career diplomat whose plan is to retire at the end of this year.

"I have told him that it is very regrettable because he feels the need to leave his position as ambassador to Washington," he said. "The entire cabinet appropriately gave Sir Kim full support on Tuesday."

May himself will resign as prime minister at the end of July and while one of his two successors, British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, said Darroch must maintain his job, the other Boris Johnson, has refused to take a decision on Kim Darroch.
